Project Overview

The 26-mile stretch of Interstate 10 between Loop 202 (Santan/South Mountain Freeway) in south Phoenix and State Route 387 near Casa Grande, also known as the Wild Horse Pass Corridor, is a major commuter route, a freight thoroughfare, and connects the Gila River Indian Community to vital services in Maricopa and Pinal Counties.

Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) and partnering agencies are preparing to reduce congestion and increase safety along the corridor by adding an additional general-purpose lane in each direction between Loop 202 to State Route 387, which will make the entire corridor between Phoenix and Tucson three lanes in each direction. High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes will also be extended in each direction from Loop 202 to Riggs Road.

The proposed implementation plan is consistent with the I-10 Final Environmental Assessment, which was approved in February 2024.

ADOT, in collaboration with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Gila River Indian Community, the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), and the Maricopa Association of Governments are working closely together to fully fund each project segment which in its entirety costs a little more than $1 billion.

ADOT has also initiated a reevaluation of the I-10 Wild Horse Pass Environmental Assessment (EA) to add a new traffic interchange (TI) on the I-10 at approximately Koli Road. The new interchange on I-10 would be located approximately halfway between the existing Wild Horse Pass Boulevard/Sundust Road and Queen Creek Road/SR 347 TIs. Construction Updates

Construction on the I-10 Bridges Over the Gila River Project is expected to begin later in 2024 and last approximately two years.

Corridor Improvement Benefits

  • Increased I-10 Capacity

    Adding an extra lane in each direction between Loop 202 and SR 387 across the Gila River Indian Community will provide I-10 drivers with three continuous travel lanes in each direction between Phoenix and Tucson, increasing capacity on one of the busiest stretches of highway in Arizona. In addition, the HOV lanes are being extended from Loop 202 to Riggs Road. These I-10 improvements should significantly reduce the need for traffic to divert off of the interstate.

  • New and Improved Interchanges

    One new interchange and five existing interchange reconstructions will be included with this project to improve interchange capacity and traffic operations.

  • Increased Safety

    This project will include the installation of freeway management systems, such as traffic sensors, cameras, variable message signs and other highway safety-related technology. In addition, wide inside and outside shoulders will be added to I-10 in both directions and all interchange ramps and crossroads will be reconfigured for a safer driver experience. Lastly, bike and pedestrian facilities will be added to every crossroad over I-10 to make freeway crossings safer.

  • Updated Infrastructure

    Age and condition issues of existing pavements, bridges, and culverts within the corridor will be reconstructed or repaired as applicable.
